New Blink Video Doorbell promises 2 years of runtime on 3 AA batteries
Amazon's Blink division--the budget-oriented sibling of Ring in the smart home space--has announced an all-new version of its affordable battery-powered Blink Video Doorbell, which is available now for 69.99. While the price has gone up by 10 compared to the previous model, the new version's higher-resolution camera (1440 1440 pixels), 150-degree field of view, and 1:1 aspect ratio will provide a head-to-toe view of visitors. Blink is bundling the new doorbell with its new AC-powered Blink Sync Module Core, which acts as a bridge to the home's Wi-Fi network (it does not have a chime that sounds off when a visitor rings the doorbell). Blink says having the doorbell connect to the Core, instead of directly to a home's router, is what enables the doorbell's remarkable 2-year battery life. The latest Blink Video Doorbell comes bundled with the Blink Sync Core, which serves as a bridge to a home's Wi-Fi network. Since the Sync Module Core does not offer any means for local storage--unlike the Sync Module 2 (with a USB-A socket) and the Sync Module XR (with a microSD card slot)--buyers of the latest Blink Video Doorbell will need to either sign up for a subscription to store video recordings in the cloud, or they'll need to replace the Core with either of Blink's other two Sync Modules.
Eufy Wired Wall Light Cam S100 review: Pretty, but not powerful
The Eufy Wired Wall Light Cam S100 isn't as powerful as many of its floodlight competitors, but it will look a whole lot more attractive mounted next to your door. Floodlight cameras almost always have one thing in common: They expect you to tolerate their industrial appearance for a large pool of light. And that's fine if you need a lot of light and you're willing to accept their beastly looks to get it. But if you want something more understated, the Eufy Wired Wall Light Cam S100 might be for you. Like the 270 Netatmo Smart Outdoor Camera I reviewed way back in 2016, the far more affordable Eufy Wired Wall Light Cam S100 isn't a true floodlight; it's more of a porch light with an onboard camera.
myQ Outdoor Camera review: The myQ ecosystem heads outdoors
The myQ Outdoor Camera's long cable makes for flexible installation options, but its low video resolution is showing off some dated tech, and you'll need to pay for a subscription to save video at all. The Chamberlain Group-owned operation seems intent not to reinvent the wheel here. Aside from a light cosmetic change to the base, this is very much the same camera as the myQ Indoor Camera and the Garage Camera. This review is part of TechHive's in-depth coverage of the best home security cameras as well as the best smart garage door controllers. The swiveling ball-and-socket base is the main departure from the design of myQ's prior models, and the design change means that the myQ Outdoor Camera must be installed on a wall, though theoretically it could also work on a ceiling in a pinch.
The best smart home products of 2024
The pace of smart home innovation hasn't slowed a whit in 2024, with new products such as the Amazon Echo Show 21 being unveiled just this week. The better news is that the smart home is no longer a niche market appealing only to enthusiasts willing to tolerate steep learning curves. We are, however, still living in a world of smart home silos; namely, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Home. The increasingly important Matter standard will unify those ecosystems one day, but that won't happen until Matter incorporates every smart home category. Considering that, we've picked more than one product in several categories, based primarily on which silo your smart home is in.
MAC Revivo: Artificial Intelligence Paves the Way
Pan, Jinzhe, Wang, Jingqing, Yun, Zelin, Xiao, Zhiyong, Ouyang, Yuehui, Cheng, Wenchi, Zhang, Wei
The vast adoption of Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth capabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, along with the rapid growth of deployed smart devices, has caused significant interference and congestion in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Traditional Wi-Fi Medium Access Control (MAC) design faces significant challenges in managing increasingly complex wireless environments while ensuring network Quality of Service (QoS) performance. This paper explores the potential integration of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods into the design of Wi-Fi MAC protocols. We propose AI-MAC, an innovative approach that employs machine learning algorithms to dynamically adapt to changing network conditions, optimize channel access, mitigate interference, and ensure deterministic latency. By intelligently predicting and managing interference, AI-MAC aims to provide a robust solution for next generation of Wi-Fi networks, enabling seamless connectivity and enhanced QoS. Our experimental results demonstrate that AI-MAC significantly reduces both interference and latency, paving the way for more reliable and efficient wireless communications in the increasingly crowded ISM band.
Your bank wants your voice. Just say no.
Silicon Valley tech pioneer Allison Huynh joined'Fox & Friends First' to discuss her take on the worldwide outages and why she believes Biden could only have'hours' left in the 2024 race. You already gave your bank your address, date of birth, Social Security number and your mother's maiden name. Now, they want your voice. Banks say it's an extra layer of biometric protection against fraud and cybercrime. But with the rise of hackers stealing voice data for deepfakes, is it worth the risk?
Mistakes to avoid if you just have to use public Wi-Fi
Kurt Knutsson introduces you to EVE, a smart and versatile humanoid robot that uses a modified version of AI and Chat GPT-4 to handle a variety of tasks. Sometimes, we find ourselves in a situation where we urgently need an internet connection, but we are not at home or at work. We might want to do some online tasks, such as checking our email, browsing social media, or streaming our favorite show. However, what if the only available option is a public Wi-Fi network that we are not familiar with? How can we use it safely without exposing our privacy and security?
Modern Tech Can't Shield Your Secret Identity
Most comic book superheroes have a secret identity, usually to protect their friends and family from retribution. However, today's computer technology would make it impossible for a superhero to maintain their secret identity. Take Spider-Man, who has a habit of diving into an alley to change into costume. However, video cameras are pervasive in New York City, which could easily capture video of him donning his mask. The New York City Police Department operates over 15,000 surveillance cameras,1 but there are thousands more Webcams controlled by residents and commercial entities.
Get a new PS5, Xbox or Nintendo Switch for your kids? Here's the best way to set it up
It's no secret one of the hottest tech gifts is a video game console. No matter what you retailer you visit, it's likely product pages for Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X all feature a similar message: sold out. But some consumers have been lucky enough to snag a new video game console, whether through that well-timed Twitter follow, or a determined internet search testing your ability to quickly tap refresh on your browser. If you bought a new video game console for your kids, don't start wrapping just yet. You want to make sure it's set up and ready so they can enjoy it right out of the box.
Cree Lighting Connected Max ST19 review: An affordable, tunable, filament smart bulb
The maker of our favorite budget-priced color A19 smart bulb is back with a slew of new smart lights, including this Edison-style ST19 filament bulb. Priced at a reasonable $13 (or $75 for a six-pack), the tunable white Cree Lighting Connected Max ST19 boasts easy setup; connects directly to Wi-Fi networks; supports Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings; and packs an impressive arsenal of automation tools. But the quirky Cree app can be confusing to use (why must you group lights that are already in a room?), and the ST19's lowest brightness setting is still a bit bright for our taste. Cree Lighting offers a wide range of bulbs in its Connected Max line, including a color A19 bulb that's our current Editors' Choice for budget-priced smart bulbs. Back in May, Cree unveiled a series of new Connected Max products, including this ST19 filament bulb.
